Bertone History

The birth of the Bertone company dates back to November 1912, when Giovanni Bertone, 28 years old at the time, opened in Turin a "carradore" shop, i.e., a repair and construction shop for animal-drawn vehicle bodies. Besides Giovanni, the workshop was staffed by three people.

In the early 20th century, cars were a rarity in Turin. Road traffic was still dominated by horse-drawn carriages and those made by young Bertone immediately stood out for fine workmanship, sturdiness, top-notch quality. Giuseppe, the second son of Bertone, was born in 1914 and from the very start everybody took to calling him Nuccio, a nickname that would accompany Giuseppe throughout his life and would become the signature of one of the great masters of Italian style in the world. The outbreak of WWI set off a crisis that hit Italy’s emerging industries very hard. Giovanni Bertone was also directly affected and had to close his workshop.

The end of the war marked a decisive turning point for the Bertone company that expanded and began to focus its attention on motor cars. 1920 saw the inauguration of new premises in via Monginevro 119, while people employed increased to 20 workers. A year on, the first major contract was signed, for the construction of a torpedo on the mechanics of the SPA 23S, which was immediately followed by a Fiat 501 Sport Siluro Corsa, the first in a series of models that would set the brand apart from its rivals in the years to come: Bertone’s top-performing sports cars.
